Eat downtown on Saturday, then drive ten minutes south. MoonCrust spent years pouring matcha out of a stall inside Logan Street Market. Last Friday it opened its own front door on South Shelby Street, four blocks away. Shelby Park did not grow a restaurant row by accident. A public market built one on purpose.
For years, the only way to get a MoonCrust matcha was to walk into somebody else’s building.
Last Friday the mother-daughter operation behind it got a building of its own at 1149 S. Shelby St. The menu is what it always was, just with room to breathe: matcha, boba, coffee, lattes, lemonades and New York bagels. The alley out back was full of weeds when they took the place. Misty and Giana turned it into a garden, and Coffee and Queers starts there this month, second Sunday.
A public market is supposed to be a stepping stone, and Shelby Park is watching one work. MoonCrust spent years in a stall inside Logan Street Market and now has its own front door four blocks away.
A matcha and an NY bagel.
Their own site lists Wednesday to Saturday, 9am to 7pm, and Sunday 9am to 5pm. Earlier in the week is not listed, so check before you make the trip.

A lot of Louisville’s best new food starts in a market stall. Be honest: have you actually walked into Logan Street Market this year?
