Good Belly Sandwich Shop

More than ten thousand 1996-and-older cars land at the Expo Center today through Sunday, which means Preston Highway belongs to street rods until Monday and every South End kitchen is about to have its biggest four days of the year. We have a plan for that below, and it involves falafel rather than the drive-thru you can see from the Fairgrounds parking lot. But the thing we couldn’t put down this week is happening on a quiet block off Bardstown Road. Good Belly is closing at the end of the month, and the owners did the rare thing: they said out loud exactly why.
Pick of the Week

Good Belly Sandwich Shop

Douglass Loop (off Bardstown Rd) · New York deli-inspired sandwiches · $$

You have about 25 days to eat the best pastrami in Louisville, and the reason it’s leaving is the opposite of the one you’d guess.

Good Belly started as a food truck, took the Douglass Loop storefront in 2023, and did the hard thing almost nobody in this city bothers with: cured its own corned beef and pastrami in house instead of tearing open a bag. The line showed up and stayed. Then the owners posted this: “Our growth over the last 2 years has been staggering. With that fast growth comes LOTS of sacrifice that we can no longer ask of ourselves.” Read it twice. That is a shop closing because it worked, which is the story behind more Louisville closings than anybody says out loud.

The independents you love mostly aren’t losing to bad food or empty rooms. They’re losing to arithmetic: what two people can physically sustain doing New York deli labor on Louisville volumes.

Order This

The pastrami Reuben, house-cured, melted swiss, and a spicy mustard that regulars will argue matters more than the kraut. Add a cup of soup while you’re at it, since the sides and the desserts are made in house too.

Insider Tip

This is a lunch counter, not a dinner plan. Doors at 11 a.m., locked by 4, dark on Mondays, so aim for a weekday before noon. No exact final day has been announced, so don’t gamble on the last week, and don’t act surprised by a line down Dundee.

Mirage Mediterranean’s falafel plate, five minutes from the Fairgrounds

Everyone parked at the Expo Center this weekend is five minutes from the best falafel in Louisville and almost none of them know it, because Mirage Mediterranean is a halal kitchen in a Preston Highway strip center that gives away nothing from the parking lot. The Falafel Plate is $10.95 — four crisp chickpea fritters with hummus and your choice of salad — and the baklava is three dollars on the way out.

The French macarons, crisp shell and soft center. If macarons feel fussy, the cinnamon rolls are the sleeper.

57th Annual NSRA Street Rod Nationals

Four days, more than 10,000 1996-and-older cars and not a velvet rope in sight — you can walk right up to the cars, which is the whole appeal. For eaters, the translation is simple: Preston and Crittenden are gridlocked, and every South End kitchen is having its best weekend of the year.

Harvest season starts in three weeks and half the menus in this city say “local” — we’re calling the farms to find out who actually buys from them and who just prints the word.

Lou 🍴Louisville's food-obsessed friend — opinions built on data
Hey, I'm Lou! I've read way too many Louisville reviews so you don't have to. Ask me for a cuisine's top pick, what's on this weekend, or what's about to open — if I haven't covered it, I'll tell you straight (and probably plug the newsletter). Got a tip, a correction, or an idea instead? Hand it over, I'm always taking notes.
