The fair runs through Sunday. The horse show finishes Saturday night. Tuesday it’s September.
So we did the other thing. Parked on that same side of town, walked into a strip mall the fair traffic passes at forty miles an hour, and ate for less than a midway dinner costs standing up.
The whole city drove to the South End this week. Almost nobody got out of the car past the gate.
Iroquois Manor shopping center. Laminated menus, table service, and a dining room that’s packed on an ordinary weeknight. It draws families three generations deep, people still in work clothes off second shift, and people who drove across town on purpose.
Louisville spent a decade writing about East Market. In the same years the South End’s Vietnamese and Latin corridor built a real food neighborhood out of strip mall parking lots, and most of the city has only seen it through a windshield on the way to the fairgrounds.
Bun bo hue. The broth comes up red with lemongrass and chili oil, thick round noodles underneath, pork hock in with the beef. Herbs, lime and bean sprouts on the side. Tear the herbs in by hand and squeeze the lime over it.

Brandy on a Butchertown roof
LouCity hosts Detroit City on Saturday at Lynn Family Stadium, and the Copper & Kings rooftop is open until 10 on Saturday, which makes it a better idea before kickoff than after. It’s a brandy distillery, which is a rarer thing to be in this town than another bourbon house.

Bourbon, BBQ, and Mayhem
Seven pitmasters, two dishes each, fourteen plates of barbecue. The fight card is Saturday night. Proceeds go to Kentuckiana Friends of V for cancer research. Tickets are sold in tiers, so check what yours actually includes.

Melissa Ann Culton, who co-owned Bluegrass Pizza & Pub down in Danville, is turning the old ShopBar space on Barret Avenue into a deli — grab-and-go counter with a retail shelf attached. Germantown has wanted exactly this for about five years.
